    The Egyptian cleric Yusuf Qaradawi is one of the world's most influential Sunni Muslim scholars. Extremely popular in the Middle East, his weekly television show, al-Shari'a wa'l-Haya (shari'a [Islamic law] and Life), is watched by some 40 million people via the Arab satellite station, al-Jazeera.     PERSONAL HISTORY

    Qaradawi was born in the village of Saft Turab, Egypt, on 9 September 1926, the only child of a poor peasant family of devout Sunni Muslims. His father died before he was born, and his mother died when he was just a year old. Without parents, Qaradawi's aunts and uncles raised him, and they encouraged him to obtain a local profession such as shopkeeping or carpentry. However, Qaradawi
